Abstract: A method of determining a thermal maturity model of a subterranean region of interest is disclosed. The method includes obtaining a plurality of rock samples for the subterranean region of interest. The method further includes determining a first porosity value, a second porosity value, and a volume fraction of organic matter, for each of the plurality of rock samples. The method further includes determining, for each of the plurality of rock samples, a thermal maturity index based, at least in part, on the first porosity value, the second porosity value and the volume fraction of organic matter. The method further includes determining the thermal maturity model based, at least in part, on the thermal maturity index for each of the plurality of rock samples.

Abstract: A mounting device for holding a sample mounted to a sample holder for use in an inverted microscope. The mounting device includes a platen; a mounting located on a sample side of the platen; a sample holder removably coupled to the mounting so the sample is along an optical axis of the inverted microscope; and a spacer shaped as a hollow prism or a hollow cylinder having a height and defining a through hole. The platen is disposed on the spacer with the sample side facing toward the spacer and the sample holder positioned within the through hole. The height of the spacer arranges the sample within a focal plane of the inverted microscope.

Abstract: A method of determining an API gravity of a crude oil includes obtaining a reservoir sample containing the crude oil, separating an aromatic fraction from the reservoir sample, analyzing the aromatic fraction using a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument, determining peak areas and a ratio of 4-methyldibenzothiophene and 1-methyldibenzothiophene, and determining the API gravity of the crude oil in the reservoir sample using an empirical correlation between API gravity and the ratio of 4-methyldibenzothiophene to 1-methyldibenzothiophene. A method of determining productivity of a region of a reservoir includes determining an API gravity of a crude oil in the sample from the region of the reservoir using an empirical correlation between API gravity and the ratio of 4-methyldibenzothiophene to 1-methyldibenzothiophene, and based on the API gravity of the sample, determining the productivity of the region of the reservoir.

Abstract: Methods and systems for determining a hydrocarbon type for a source sample are disclosed. The method includes obtaining a thermal maturity relationship and the source sample from a geological region of interest. The method further includes separating aromatic fraction from the source sample, and separating, measuring, and identifying responses of the aromatic fraction using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and determining a thermal maturity ratio using the responses. The method still further includes determining a thermal maturity indicator using the thermal maturity ratio and the thermal maturity relationship and determining the hydrocarbon type based on the thermal maturity indicator. The system includes a ball mill, a pipette column, a GC-MS system, and a computer processor.
