Abstract: A method of preparing an enhanced oil recovery composition is described. The method includes carbonizing a biomass waste material to provide carbon microparticles. The method includes functionalizing the carbon microparticles through an acid treatment such that the carbon microparticles have a hydrophilic surface. The method further includes grinding the carbon microparticles to provide carbon nanoparticles, where the carbon nanoparticles have a hydrophilic surface and a hydrophobic surface. A method of enhanced oil recovery is also described.

Abstract: A composition includes Janus carbon nanoparticles dispersed in an aqueous-based oil recovery fluid, wherein each of the carbon nanoparticles includes a hydrophobic surface and a hydrophilic surface. A method of preparing an enhanced oil recovery fluid including carbonizing waste plastic material to provide carbon microparticle, functionalizing the carbon microparticles such that the carbon microparticles comprise a hydrophilic surface functionality, grinding the carbon microparticles to provide Janus carbon nanoparticles, wherein the Janus carbon nanoparticles comprise a hydrophilic surface and a hydrophobic surface, and mixing the Janus carbon nanoparticles with an aqueous-based fluid to provide the enhanced oil recovery fluid.
