    Abstract: A system includes an engine having a main combustion chamber and a prechamber containing a spark plug. The prechamber is in fluid communication with the main combustion chamber through at least one orifice. An engine intake line provides intake air to the engine. An engine exhaust line receives exhaust gases from the engine. An exhaust gas recirculation line transports a portion of the exhaust gases from the engine exhaust line to the engine intake line, forming an exhaust gas recirculation loop through the engine. The system includes a reformer having a reactor containing a catalyst-coated substrate. The reformer generates a gaseous reformate from a fuel. The system includes a prechamber feed line to transport a stream of the gaseous reformate from the reformer to the prechamber.

    Abstract: An engine includes a combustion chamber, a fuel injector, a spark plug, and a piston. The combustion chamber receives air from an intake valve, which receives air from an external environment of the engine. The fuel injector includes a fuel channel, a fuel port, an air port, a needle valve, and a premixing tube. The fuel channel receives fuel from a fuel supply. The needle valve initially covers the fuel port, and actuates to fluidly connect the fuel port to the fuel channel such that the fuel port receives the fuel. The air port draws air into the fuel injector, and the premixing tube mixes the air and fuel to create a mixture. The mixture is fed into the combustion chamber along a central axis of the premixing tube such that the mixture intersects the electrode of the spark plug, which ignites the mixture to actuate the piston.

    Abstract: A method of operating an engine includes operating the engine in first and second engine operating map regions by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a first stoichiometric fuel mixture and a first volume of residual gas. The engine is operated in a third engine operating map region by performing turbulent jet controlled compression ignition (TJCCI) with an ultra lean fuel mixture and a first volume of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, a fourth engine operating map region by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a third stoichiometric fuel mixture and a second volume of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, and a fifth engine operating map region, characterized by shutting off the engine. The engine is operated in a mode transition region between the second, third, and fourth engine operating map regions by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a second stoichiometric fuel mixture and a second volume of residual gas.

    Abstract: A method of operating an engine includes igniting a combustible mixture in a combustion chamber of the engine, which produces exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are ejected into an exhaust manifold of the engine to create a primary exhaust stream. A portion of the exhaust gases is separated from the primary exhaust stream to create a secondary exhaust stream. Air and fuel are then mixed with the secondary exhaust stream to form a reformer feed mixture. The reformer feed mixture is reacted in a catalytic reformer to create a reformate exhaust stream, which is then mixed with an intake air stream to create a mixed air stream. The mixed air stream is the fed to the combustion chamber of the engine as the combustible mixture.
