Abstract: PURPOSE:To remove an inorg. salt from an inorg. salt-containing amphoteric surfactant solution by electrodialysis using a hydrophilic neutral membrane and a cation exchange membrane. CONSTITUTION:An inorg. salt is removed by electrodialysis using a hydrophilic neutral membrane whose water retention quantity is 0.05-2.0ml/g dry resin and a cationic exchange membrane. Stable operation can be performed over a long period of time and an amphoteric surfactant can be recovered in high recovery rate.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the leakage of the liq. dialyzate by using a multi-layered plastic material obtained by laminating a filmy structure having excellent flexibility on both surfaces of a filmy structure having excellent heat resistance. CONSTITUTION:A film 2 such as polyethylene and polyester having excellent heat resistance is used as the intermediate layer and the soft film 3 of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, etc., having excellent flexibility and having the m.p. lower than the dialysis temp. is laminated on both surfaces of the film 2 as the surface layers to constitute a gasket 1 for an electrodialyzing vessel. Since the film layer 3 is softened and a part of the film is packed in a recess on the surface of an ion-exchange membrane, the adhesion between the membrane and the gasket is increased and the leakage of the liq. dialyzate is reduced. The thickness of the film layer 2 is regulated to >=0.1mm and the thickness of the film layer 3 is appropriately controlled to 0.02-0.2mm.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce a diaphragm permitting minimal migration of metal ions and a low membrane resistance in the applied system by using as the diaphragm a member consisting of surface layers of anion-exchange thin film and an intermediate section containing a cation-exchange layer and having a spacified alternating resistance in hydrochloric acid. CONSTITUTION:A diaphragm consists of surface layers facing the electrodes and consisting of thin anion-exchange layers, and intermediate layers containing at least one cation exchange layer. The alternating resistance of the diaphragm in hydrochloric acid is 0.03-2OMEGA.cm . And, preferably, the resistance of the diaphragm is 0.05-1OMEGA. The cation exchange layer uses sulfonate groups as its exchange groups. It has a resistance of 0.02-1.5OMEGA.cm which preferably constitutes 60-99.5% of the total resistance of the diaphragm. A diaphragm having a resistance of 0.03OMEGA.cm or below is not desirable since it has insufficient strength and allows a rapid migration of metal ions. A diaphragm resistance exceeding 2OMEGA. cm is undesirable due to a large IR drop during charge and discharge.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of concentration by electrodialysis processing by returning residual liquid which is on the side of concentrated liquid before the an electrodialyser starts operating to the supply liquid tank of a reverse osmosis device. CONSTITUTION:The demineralized water on the side 6a of the supply liquid of the electrodialyser is recycled to the reverse osmosis supply liquid tank 2a through a line (j). Consequently, the salt concentration of intermediate concentrated liquid supplied to the electrodialyser 6 through a line (g) decreases gradually and when the concentration of the intermediate concentrated liquid reaches the density where the efficiency of the electrodialysis processing decreases, e.g. 30g/l, the line of the intermediate concentrated liquid is switched from (g) to (f) to quit the electrodialysis processing, thereby cyclic concentration by the reverse osmosis device. In this case, the residual liquid on the concentration side 6b of the electrodialyser decreases on the whole, so this residual liquid is returned to the reverse osmosis supply liquid tank 2a through the line (j). Consequently, a decrease in the concentration of the concentrated liquid obtained finally is prevented to some extent.

When a batch operation is to be carried out, for example, the concn. in a desalting chamber is devided into a high concn. range, a middle concn. range and a low concn. range, and the specified voltages V1, V2, V3 and the end electric current values I1, I2, I3 are respectively set in each concn. range. At the beginning of operation, the output voltage V1 of the output terminal 14a of the rectifier 10 is relayed by the changeover device 11 to impress the specified voltage V1 to the vessel A. When the desalting is proceeded and the electric current flowing through the vessel A is lowered to I1, I2 in order, the output voltages V2, V3 of output terminals 14b, 14c are changed over in order.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To selectively remove or concentrate and recover an alkali component by separating the alkali component from an alkali component-containing solution by an electrodialytic cell equipped with hydrophilic neutral membranes having specific water retentivity and cation exchange membranes as diaphragms. CONSTITUTION:Hydrophilic neutral membranes 5 whose water retentivity is 0.05-2.0ml/g-dry resin and cation exchange membranes 4 are provided to an electrodialytic cell 1. Since this electrodialytic method is characterized in that the alkali resistance of the membranes is strong as compared with a conventional method using anion exchange membranes, the electrodialytic cell can stably be operated for a long time in an alkali atmosphere and an alkali component can be selectively separated from a solution. Even in comparison with a method using microporous diaphragms in place of anion exchange membranes, when alkali is removed for the sake of the purification of useful matter, the loss of the useful matter is reduced and, when alkali is recovered from waste water simultaneously containing an inorg. salt and alkali, alkali reduced in the content of salts being impurities can be recovered.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently produce free acid from org. acid salt by providing a substitution chamber surrounded by a cation-exchange membrane and a cation- exchange membrane between an anode compartment and a cathode compartment and/or a desalting chamber enclosed by an anion-exchange membrane and a cation-exchange membrane to constitute an electrodialytic cell. CONSTITUTION:At least one substitution chamber 5 surrounded by a cation- exchange membrane 1 and a cation-exchange membrane 2 is provided between an anode compartment 7 and a cathode compartment 8, and the concentration chamber 6 and/or desalting chamber 4 enclosed by an anion-exchange membrane 3 and a cation-exchange membrane and adjacent to the chamber 5 are furnished to constitute an electrodialysis cell. Consequently, a free acid (e.g. lactic acid) is efficiently produced from org. salts of a weak or strong acid (e.g. sodium lactate), and further a cation constituting a salt (e.g. sodium benzenesulfonate) is replaced with an optional other cationic acid (e.g. benzenesulfonic acid).
