Abstract: A method of welding by hot isostatic pressing for joining parts (2, 3) of a solid, preferably metallic material into a composite machine element (1). The parts (2, 3) are formed so that good contact is obtained between their surfaces which are to be joined together. The joint (4) is covered by a layer (5) of a powder or a mixture of powder with substantially the same composition as the material in the different parts. This powder layer (5) is covered by one or more layers (10, 11) of glass powder, which upon heating form a gas-impermeable layers. Between the powder layer (5) covering the joint (4) and a glass powder layer (10) nearest the said layer (5) there may be applied a powder layer (6) of a powder having a melting point higher than the pressing temperature. The parts (2, 3) are pressed isostatically in a known manner at such a temperature that diffusion bonding is achieved at the contact surfaces.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method of producing an entirely dense, pore-free object 1 from a metal alloy. The object is shaped by casting in a thin-wall casting mould 2. The object 1 with surrounding casting mould 2 is surrounded by a gas-tight layer 10, of glass for example. The object 1 is heated to a temperature at which the material in the object 1 is plastically deformable and subjected to a gas pressure on all sides. The glass layer 10 prevents gas from getting into the object 1 and into pores 3, 5, 6 and cracks 4 therein. The mould 2 prevents glass from getting into pores 3, 5 and cracks 4 which emerge at the surface of the object. The pressure forces together any cracks 4 and pores 3, 5, 6 and produces a perfectly dense, homogeneous object 1.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and structure for manufacturing solid bodies from a quantity of powder. The powder is preformed and the preform is enclosed in a casing provided with an evacuation nozzle. The preform and the casing are preheated and the preform is degassed by evacuating the casing through the nozzle after the casing has been appropriately evacuated. The nozzle is then sealed by heating the same to forging temperatures, compressing the end thereof which is remote from the casing, cutting the compressed end of the nozzle to present a straight edge and thereafter welding the nozzle shut along said edge. After the nozzle has been sealed the same is enclosed in and surrounded by a gas tight hood and the space between the hood and the nozzle is filled with a fill material which may be a powder, an annular solid body or a combination of such body and a quantity of powder. After the nozzle has been appropriately shielded and covered by the hood and fill material, the casing with the powder preform therein is placed in a high pressure furnace where the preform is subjected to isostatic high pressure hot pressing.
