Abstract: 1434208 Measuring strip tension electrically ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 10 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42460/73 Heading G1N The distribution of tension across a strip 31 Fig. 2 in a rolling mill is determined by a roll 30 over which the strip passes, which is divided into a plurality of axially displaced sections 1-25 each provided with two, diametrically opposite, magnetostrictive pressure transducers. The average tension and the variation in tension across the strip is determined as described in Specification 1156705. The present invention modifies the average tension calculation in accordance with the number of transducers 7-19 which are fully covered by the strip 31 and the end transducers 6, 20 which are only partly covered by the strip. A device 32 determines the coverage of each transducer and controls switching arrangements 33, 34 accordingly. Fully covered transducers are connected through switches 33 , and the partly covered transducers are connected through switches 34 to be modified at 37 in accordance with the extent of the coverage, calculated at 35, before the signals are added at 38 to determine the average tension and the deviation from average, indicated at 41.
