Abstract: A method of containing radioactive or other dangerous material separately or intermixed with a bonding compound of a material, resistant to leaching by water, in a gas-tight container and of converting the material by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) into a dense body. The material is filled into a cylindrical container having a corrugated bellows-like wall. The dangerous material is prevented from filling up the annular spaces formed by the corrugations, by means of a barrier means placed inside the container. A metallic netting combined with a paper-like sheet of ceramic material makes a suitable barrier means.

Abstract: Method of encasing radioactive material from nuclear reactors, for example, residual products from reprocessing plants such as casing tube residue or spent fuel during direct dumping. The fuel rod residue or spent fuel and a metal powder are filled into a metal container 1 which is closed shut. This is placed in an outer metal container 3. Between this and the first mentioned container 1 are arranged two layers 4, 5, 9 and 6, 7, 8 of ceramic powder which is sintered into a solid body at different temperatures. The outer layer 4, 5, 9 has a lower sintering temperature than the inner one. The outer container 3 is closed and heated along with the contents and exposed to an isostatic pressure at temperature high enough for the outer layer 4, 5, 9 of ceramic powder and the contents of the inner container 1 to be sintered into solid bodies.

Abstract: A container for enclosing particulate or piece-formed radioactive material which is to be converted into a solid body by isostatic pressing at a high temperature and a high pressure. The container may have a corrugated sheath and suitably a plane lid and a plane bottom. The corrugation makes possible axial compression of the container prior to the pressing. The container may also have a cylindrical sheath and bellows projecting into the sheath and joining the sheath of the container to a lid and a bottom. The bellows make it possible to insert the lid and the bottom by gas pressure, so that the material present in the container is axially compressed.

Abstract: Method of converting a radioactive material in particle form into a dense block by enclosing the particulate material 6 in a redundant container. This is constructed of several sheet metal capsules 1, 7, 10, previously arranged one in the other and each one closed by a lid 1b, 7c, 10c. In order to provide suitable placement of weld seams 2, 8, 11 for remote-controlled welding, intermediate spaces 9 are formed between the lids of the capsules. These are filled with a powder, advisedly a spherical steel powder, or with appropriately configured pieces of steel, which reduce the deformations of the lid 1b, 7c, 10c and, thus, the risk of ruptures and leaks when the assembled capsule is put under pressure. The risk of leaks forming in all the capsules 1, 7, 10 is very low and so is the risk of contamination of the press equipment.
