    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel exerting a corrosion resistance in an environment of concentrated sulfuric acid.
    SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel is an alloy having a composition comprising, by weight, about 0.025% or less carbon, about 0.5 to about 4.1% manganese, about 5.5 to about 6.2% silicon, about 11 to about 15% chromium, about 9.0 to about 15.5% nickel, about 0.8 to about 1.2% molybdenum, about 0.8 to about 2% copper and the balance essentially being iron and unavoidable impurities. The composition results in a low alloy content in a high-silicon austenitic stainless steel that maintains a corrosion rate that is comparable to and exceeds those of existing alloys when treating concentrated sulfuric acid. Acceptable characteristics are found when hot working is carried out in the range of about 2,100°F (1,148.9°C) to about 2,200°F (1,204.5°C). Annealing in the range of about 1,925°F (1,051.7°C) to about 2,025°F (1,107.2°C) is preferred, and rapid water quenching after annealing is also preferred.
