    Abstract: The presently disclosed technology provides a composition and method for producing a thermally stable, rigid polyurethane and/or polyisocyanurate foam by reducing or eliminating the presence of alkali metal components and/or alkali earth metal components, thereby producing a foam, which under fire conditions, will at least maintain its volume or intumesce or not reduce its volume by more than about 30%. The presently disclosed technology allows for a reduction in alkali and/or alkali earth metal components in foams that meet current standards with reduced fire retardant loadings. The presently disclosed technology further provides foams with lower alkali and/or alkali earth metal components which may be made to increase in volume under fire conditions.
