Abstract:
The invention relates to a novel method of obtaining an aqueous dispersion of hydrophobic polymers which are dispersed in the form of particles. The particles have an average diameter that is less than 100 nm and said particles are stabilised jointly by means of a macromolecular surfactant based on imidised maleic styrene/anhydride copolymer with a low mass and an anionic surfactant. The invention also relates to the use of one such dispersion in paper processing and sizing and in relation to coatings for substrates as diverse as wood, metals, glass, construction materials, textiles, leather, plastics, etc.

Abstract:
The invention concerns a multilayer composite product comprising at least once successively a first soft or rigid material layer; a second layer consisting of a pressure-sensitive adhesive polymeric film formed by applying on the first layer at least a latex (L1), then by drying said latex; and a third layer consisting of a soft or rigid material, a latex (L1) obtained by emulsion polymerisation of the mixture of the following monomers, for 100 wt. %: 40-95 wt. % of at least a (meth)acrylic or vinyl monomer capable of resulting in a homopolymer having a Tg /= 0 DEG C; 1-6 wt. % of at least a (meth)acrylic carboxylic monomer; 0.5 wt. % of at least (meth)acrylic monomer ethoxylated with 1-20 ethylene oxide moles; more than 0.075 wt. % to 5 wt. % of at least a (meth)acrylic or vinyl monomer comprising a ureido group; and 0-2 wt. % of at least an acrylic or vinyl monomer bearing a sulphonate function.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a method for obtaining an aqueous dispersion of hydrophobic polymers dispersed in the form of particles with mean diameter less than 100 nm stablized soley with a macromolecular surfactant based on low molecular weight styrene/maleic anhydride imide copolymer. The invention also concerns the use of said dispersion for treating and sizing paper.
Abstract:
Substrates having a water-soluble substance subject to migration toward the surface of the substrate are treated or coated with a composition comprising a a latex or solution of a film forming polymer and sufficient imidized maleic anhydride polymer dispersant or emulsifier to inhibit the migration toward the surface of the water-soluble substance. Preferably a styrene-maleic anhydride polymer is imidized with a diamine and is made cationic by neutralizing with an acid. The imidized polymer is preferably the only surfactant or dispersant in the latex composition. Pigment pastes and primers comprising the imidized polymer can be applied to substrates to confer water and alkaline hydrolysis resistance and to prevent the migration of any water soluble substance in the substrate.
Abstract:
The invention describes the use in a formulation for floor adhesives of an aqueous dispersion containing from 5 to 70% by weight of at least one polymer having a glass transition temperature below 0° C. and carrying a ureido functional group. The dispersions of the invention do not give off volatile organic compounds and, after application, result in crosslinked films having a good tack/cohesion compromise.
Abstract:
A monocomponent system based on a core-active latex and used for coatings which can be crosslinked at ambient temperatures, and post-crosslinked by thermal treatment, comprising a mixture of two dispersions of particles (A) and (B) obtained by polymerisation in aqueous emulsion of monomers (A) and (B); with (A) containing an unsaturated monomer (a), being polymerisable with radicals, and containing a group of formula: N-C(=X)-NH; (where X = O or S; and (B) containing unsaturated monomer (b) polymerisable by radical means and which contains a (masked) aldehyde group, such as mercaptal, mercaptol, dioxolane, and dithiolane. Also claimed is a use of the system as a binder in coating compositions.
