Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal device with improved character input operability and responsiveness that allows a user to stably input characters with the minimum key depression. SOLUTION: The portable terminal device 100 is provided with a motion vector detection part, which detects a motion vector from a moving image signal output from an image pickup part 2, and a key operation part 8 having a plurality of operation keys. A group of options corresponding to each of a plurality of characters is assigned to each of a plurality of the operation keys. A character input processing part 6 selects the character corresponding to one option in the group of the options selected by character selection table information 644 on the basis of the selection of any one of the groups of the options with the operation of the operation keys by the user and the determination result obtained after determining whether the motion direction is any one of a plurality of directions respectively corresponding to the options in the group of the options in accordance with detection range reference data 642.
