    Abstract: An initiator (10) for a vehicle occupant restraint airbag system with electrostatic discharge protection to prevent inadvertent system actuation. The initiator includes a cup-shaped conducting metallic housing (12) containing pyrotechnic material closed by a sealing material (16) such as glass which either extends across an open end (14) of the housing (12) or across an annular conducting header ring (18) fitted against an inner surface of the housing (12) to encapsulate the pyrotechnic material. First and second electrodes (20, 22) extend through the sealing material (16) and are interconnected by a resistive bridge element. A surface mount type zener diode (30) has its anode electrically connected to the housing (12) and its cathode electrically connected to the second electrode (22).

    Abstract: An initiator for an inflator of an automotive airbag restraint system includes a housing and a wall dividing the housing into two parts, one for housing a firing element of the initiator, and one for receiving at least one application specific integrated circuit which performs functions of a portion of an electronic control unit. A mounting element is located in the second part of the housing, and at least one application specific integrated circuit is carried by the mounting element. The mounting element and two or more application specific integrated circuits may be provided as a package, in which at least two application specific integrated circuits are mounted in a stacked condition to form an application specific integrated circuit stack. The application specific integrated circuits are configured such that predetermined electrical circuit locations of adjacent ones of the application specific integrated circuits to be interconnected are aligned. The package includes connectors for electrically interconnecting these predetermined electrical circuit locations in adjacent ones of the application specific integrated circuits in the stack.

    Abstract: The integral projectile squib includes a squib comprising a body having a first end and a second end with electrical energizing terminals extending from the first end and a first tubular portion at the second end. The body has a second tubular portion adjacent the first tubular portion. The tubular portions are axially aligned, with the second tubular portion having a larger circumference than the first tubular portion. A locking ring is rigidly attached in encircling relation to the circumference of the first tubular portion of the squib at a position that is closer to the second tubular portion than to the second end of the body of the squib. A caplike cover has an inner wall with an open end and a closed end. The cover is attachable to the squib to cover the first tubular portion and a portion of the second tubular portion and having a collar-like vessel edge at the open end that is sized to snugly cover a portion of the second tubular portion when the caplike cover is positioned in attached relation to the squib. The caplike cover has a locking feature on the inner wall that cooperates with the locking ring on the first tubular portion to retain the caplike cover in locked attachment to the squib until the squib is initiated by the application of an electrical signal to the terminals to cause an explosion and the production of a gas that ruptures the first tubular portion of the squib to force the caplike cover off the squib and launch the caplike cover as a projectile.

    Abstract: The inflator includes two separate chambers, each containing a quantity of stored inert gas. Each chamber additionally includes a heating device to heat the stored gas. To provide adaptive performance, one, or the other, or both of the heating devices may be fired, depending upon the severity of the collision. The heated stored gas increases in pressure and breaks free of the chamber to inflate the cushion. The two chambers are preferably provided with restricted gas communication, to equalize pressure between the chambers over time. This restricted communication maintains the chambers essentially separate over the short time periods associated with inflation. Over time, however, the communication will permit any unfired chamber to depressurize, providing increased safety.
