    Abstract: A controller may map user equipment (UE) devices (10) in a wireless system to access points, AP, (6) and reflective intelligent surfaces, RIS,.(96) The controller may generate a corresponding communications schedule based on the locations of the UE device(s) (10), AP(s) (6), and RIS(s) (96) and based on current traffic demands. The controller may control the RIS(s) (96), AP(s) (6), and UE devices (10) to implement the schedule. The schedule may divide the time, frequency, and/or spatial resources of the RIS(s) (96) to meet the traffic demands of the UE devices (10) using a space division multiple access scheme, a time-division multiple access scheme, a frequency-division multiple access scheme, and/or a distributed multiple-input and multiple output scheme. The schedule may be updated over time as needed. The RIS(s) (96) may allow for a reduction in the number of AP(s) required to meet the dynamic demands of the UE devices (10), thereby minimizing deployment and operating costs.

When a first UE device becomes off-grid and has an emergency message, the first UE device may transmit device-to-device signals for receipt by a second UE device. The signals may include one or more preambles that precede the emergency message and that are used by the second UE device to perform synchronization with the first UE device. The second UE device may periodically activate a receiver during a series of windows to listen for the signals, may receive a preamble sequence during one of the windows, and may synchronize its timing to the first UE device for receipt of the emergency message based on the preamble sequence. This may allow the UE devices to be synchronized for transfer of the emergency message over long distances while consuming a minimal amount of power on the second UE device.

    Abstract: A user equipment UE device (10) may communicate with an access point AP (6) at greater than 100 GHz via a reconfigurable intelligent surface RIS (96). The UE (10) may select tracking beams based on sensor data. The UE (10) may instruct the RIS (96) to sweep over the tracking beams while the UE (10) gathers performance metric data. The UE (10) may identify a serving beam (154) based on the performance metric data. The UE (10) may control the RIS (96) to form the serving beam (154) to reflect wireless data between the AP (6) and the UE (10). Using the UE (10) to intelligently select tracking beams based on sensor data may greatly reduce the amount of time required to track the UE device (10) as it moves relative to sweeping over all formable signal beams, thereby reducing latency and minimizing disruptions in wireless data transfer between the UE device (10) and the AP (6).
