Abstract: A portable electronic device (900) includes a housing, a front cover defining a front side of the portable electronic device, a display stack (1102) below the front cover and comprising a plurality of display layers configured to produce a graphical output in a display region (902) of the display stack, the graphical output visible through the front cover, and a light sensor module (922) positioned at least partially within the housing and coupled to the display stack (1102) in the display region. The light sensor module (922) may be configured to receive ambient light passing through the front cover and through the plurality of display layers and, while a blanking interval (1122) is positioned over the light sensor module (922), produce an output corresponding to the received ambient light, the portable electronic device (900) configured to determine an ambient light value based at least in part on the output from the light sensor module (922).

Abstract: According to some embodiments, a portable electronic device is described. The portable electronic device includes a housing having side walls and a back wall that define a cavity, where the back wall includes (i) a first section having a first exterior surface, and (ii) a second section having a second exterior surface that is parallel to and vertically displaced from the first exterior surface. The portable electronic device further includes a brace structure joined to the back wall, a trim structure welded to the brace structure, where the trim structure has an external surface that is vertically displaced from the second exterior surface, and a camera module disposed within the cavity and carried by the brace structure.
