Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to a system and method for providing flexible receiver configuration in wireless communication systems, such as 802.11 WLAN systems. In one embodiment, a wireless device may transmit a first data frame including first configuration information specifying a first configuration of the receiver to notify a remote device that the wireless device intends to configure its receiver according to the first configuration. After receiving an acknowledgement frame confirming the first configuration information, the wireless device may configure the receiver according to the first configuration. In another embodiment, a wireless device may receive a first data frame including first configuration information and further including a request that the wireless device configure its receiver according to the first configuration. In response, the wireless device may configure the receiver according to the first configuration. In either case, the wireless device may receive subsequent communications according to the first configuration.

Abstract: An interface circuit in an electronic device (such as an access point) may provide a wake-up-radio (WUR) discovery frame for a recipient electronic device, where the WUR discovery frame includes an operating class of a wireless local area network (WLAN) associated with the electronic device. The operating class may specify a regulatory domain and a channel set of the WLAN. Moreover, the WUR discovery frame may include an index of a channel in the channel set. Furthermore, the WUR discovery frame may include a compressed or a partial identifier associated with the electronic device or the WLAN. The amount of compression may be based at least in part on a communication environment of the electronic device, such as a number of electronic devices, or a number of neighboring WLANs. Thus, the WUR discovery frame may have a variable size or length.

Abstract: A recipient electronic device that receives a wake-up frame is described. This recipient electronic device may include an interface circuit that communicates with an electronic device, where the interface circuit includes a main radio and a wake-up radio (WUR) that at least selectively transitions the main radio from a lower-power mode to a higher-power mode. During operation, the WUR receives the wake-up frame intended for the recipient electronic device, where the wake-up frame comprises a payload field with data. For example, the wake-up frame may specify: a total size of the wake-up frame, and/or a size of the payload field. In response to the wake-up frame, the WUR selectively transitions the main radio from the lower-power mode to the higher-power mode. Moreover, the main radio provides an acknowledgment associated with the recipient electronic device that indicates that the recipient electronic device received the wake-up frame.

Abstract: A technique for estimating energy consumption of a portable electronic device is described. During this energy-estimation technique, the portable electronic device determines hardware-state information for communication subsystems that implement different communication protocols, and software-state information for the communication protocols. Then, using models for the communication subsystems, and the hardware-state information and the software-state information, the portable electronic device estimates the energy consumption. Based on the estimated energy consumption, certain percentages of the battery charge may be allotted for different applications or features, battery-life diagnostics may be improved, and useful information may be provided to a user about the battery drain on their portable electronic device.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for configuring wireless circuitry of a wireless device to optimize power consumption based on operating states of the wireless device are disclosed. When associating with or while associated with a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capable wireless local area network (WLAN) access point (AP), the wireless device configures the wireless circuitry to use a MIMO mode that includes at least two spatial streams for communication with multiple radio frequency (RF) receive chains active, a single-input single-output (SISO) mode or a multiple-input single-output (MISO) mode that includes only one spatial stream and a single RF receive chain active, or a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) mode that includes only one spatial stream and multiple RF receive chains active, based on balancing application requirements for data throughput with power saving modes to conserve battery levels. MIMO modes can be used when an active application benefits from MIMO rates or when transferring large files.
