    Abstract: The present invention is a novel process, with or without solvent, for manufacture of compounds of the formula 1 wherein P is selected from phenyl and naphthyl; wherein R1 and R2 and R3 are each independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, aralkoxy, halogen, alkoxyalkoxy, and aralkoxyalkoxy; wherein R5 is selected from substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, and substituted or unsubstituted naphthyl, the substituents being each independently selected from alkyl (C1-C8), alkoxy (C1-C8), aroxy, aralkoxy (C1-C8) and halogen. The process comprises reacting substituted phenols or naphthols of the formula 2 with ethylene carbonate in the presence of a first catalyst selected from metal halide, quarternary ammonium halide and quarternary phosphonium halide thereby forming an intermediate of the formula 3 then reacting the intermediate with a first compound selected from alkyl or aralkylhalide, alkyl or aralkyl sulfate, and alkyl or aralkyl sulfonate together with a metal hydroxide in the presence of a second catalyst, the second catalyst selected from quarternary ammonium salt or quarternary phosphonium salt.

    Abstract: A linerless label system comprising pressure adhesive coating, release coating and thermal imaging coating is described. The thermal imaging coating contains as one of its components the compounds of the formula (I) 1 wherein R1 and R2 are selected from methyl, ethyl, aryl, aryl substituted with methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy or halogen, benzyl or benzyl with phenyl substituted with methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy or halogen, R3,R4,R5 and R6 are selected from hydrogen, halogen, methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy, phenyl, R7 and R8 are each independently selected from methyl or ethyl, R9 is selected from hydrogen, methoxy or ethoxy, R10 is selected from hydrogen, dimethylamino or diethylamino, R11 is methyl. The imaged linerless label according to the invention has been a bar reflectance of less than 20 at 670 nanometers, a print control contrast signal of at least 80 and a BNL background of at least 75%.

    Abstract: The present invention is a novel thermally-responsive record material comprising a substrate having provided thereon in substantially contiguous relationship an electron donating dye precursor, an acidic developer material, a compound of the formula 1 wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aralkyl, aralkoxy, halogen, and alkoxyalkoxy; wherein R4 is independently selected from alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkoxy, and aralkoxyalkoxy, and a suitable binder therefor. In the context of the present invention the alkyl moieties in the alkyl, aralkyl, aralkoxy, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkoxy and aralkoxyalkoxy preferably are eight carbons or less, and more preferably from one through four carbons. Substituents on aryl moieties in aryl, aralkyl, aralkoxy, and aralkoxyalkoxy groups can include hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy and halogen. The alkyl group in these substituents also is eight carbons or less, and more preferably from one through four carbons. The thermally responsive record material of the invention has the unexpected and remarkable properties of enhanced image intensity or density, and/or improved thermal response.

    Abstract: The present invention is a novel class of compounds useful in useful in thermally-responsive record material of the type comprising a substrate having provided thereon in substantially contiguous relationship an electron donating dye precursor, and an acidic developer material. The novel compound of the invention is a compound of the formula 1 wherein P is selected from 2 wherein R1, is selected from hydrogen, alkoxy, and aralkoxy; wherein R2 is aralkoxyalkoxy when P is phenyl, and R2 is selected from aralkoxyalkoxy or alkoxyalkoxy when P is naphthyl. Said alkyl moieties are each independently from one to eight carbons, said aryl moieties each independently being unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl (C1-C8), alkoxy (C1-C8) or halogen. The compounds of the invention enable manufacture of thermally responsive record material of the invention having the unexpected and remarkable properties of enhanced image intensity or density, and/or improved thermal response. The compounds of the invention also find use in diverse applications such as emolients and softening agents for creams, lots and cosmetics.
