    Abstract: In order to discriminate between laminar flow and turbulent flow states, andto provide an indication, e.g.to a pilot of an aircraft of air flow over an aircraft wing, a sensor mounted on the wing provides an analogue signal of airflow, and an intermittency value of the analogue signal is derived in analogue circuitry including an AC coupling of the signal to an integrator for integrating the signal for a preset time. The integrated value is compared with a threshold value to indicate whether the intermittency represents quiet laminar flow or noisy turbulent flow.

    Abstract: The structural integrated wiring loom comprises conductor and separator structures, encapsulated a binder matrix. The conductor and separator structures comprise conductive and non-conductive fibre plies respectively. One wiring loom includes a conductor having at least two electrical connectors encapsulated by a separator structure and a screen structure which encapsulates the separator structure. The screen structure comprises further conductive fibre plies. Other wiring looms also include a central separator layer. Preferably the conductive fibres are metal coated carbon fibres. The device may be used to replace structural panels on a vehicle vessel or craft, to transfer electrical power or RF signals, data transmission around a composite structure.

    Abstract: A method of structural health monitoring a composite structure 11 comprising at least one thermal element 18, comprises the steps of applying a stimulus to cause heating of said thermal element, removing the stimulus, and measuring the electrical resistance of said element as a function of time, to provide a thermal decay profile. The thermal decay profile may be monitored and compared to a library of reference thermal decay profiles, any changes being indicative of cracks, delamination, debonding or material changes. The thermal element is preferably electrically isolated from the fibre plys and may be an electrically and thermally conductive tow such as carbon fibre or metal wire. A detector element 20 may be located proximate to the thermal element; the electrical resistance of the detector element as a function of time providing a detector element thermal decay profile. Preferably, the thermal element and detector element may be located either side of a bonded joint line 16. A composite material comprising at least one thermal element electrically isolated from at least one fibre ply and encapsulated in cured resin binder matrix is also provided.

    Abstract: A structural health monitoring arrangement comprises a component (panel 30) formed of fibre reinforced composite material with a plurality of electrical conducting fibres (conductors 32) intrinsic to the composite defining electrical paths that run through the composite. The paths act as sensing paths running through the material and a detector watches for changes in electrical property indicative of a structural (8x8 array of LEDs 36) event. The paths may be configured as an open or a closed node grid whose electrical continuity is monitored directly or indirectly. Alternatively they may be fibres having a piezoresi stive property and the changes in resistance may be monitored.
