    Abstract: A drill bit (100) is provided that employs a plurality of discrete, post-like, abrasive, particulate-impregnated cutting structures (118) extending upwardly from the bit face. The cutting structures may be disposed on abrasive, particulate-impregnated blades (108) that also define a plurality of fluid passages (116) on the bit face (106). One or more of the cutting structures may include outermost ends that exhibit a cross-sectional geometry that is elongated in a direction along a defined axis. The cutting structures may be oriented such that the defined axis (132) is neither coplanar with, nor parallel to, an intended rotational path of the at least one discrete cutting structure during operation of the bit. In one embodiment, the cutting structure is oriented such that the defined axis is at an acute angle relative to a tangent of the intended rotational path for the associated cutting structure. Other or different features may include, for example, additional, differently configured cutting elements.

    Abstract: A rotary drag bit (110) includes a primary cutter row (143) comprising at least one primary" cutter (11) and a multiple backup cutter, group (153). The multiple backup cutter group comprises a first and second trailing cutter row (154, 155), each comprising at least one cutter positioned to follow the at least one primary cutter. The rotary drag bit life is extended by the multiple backup cutter group, making the bit more durable and extending the life of the cutters. Further, the cutters of the multiple backup cutter group are configured to selectively engage a subterranean formation material being drilled, providing improved bit life and reduced stress upon the cutters. Other embodiments of rotary drag bits are provided.

    Abstract: A reaming tool (10) includes a tubular body (12) having a nose portion (1 4) with a concave center. A plurality of blades (20) defining junk slots (24 ) therebetween extend axially behind the nose (14) and taper outwardly from the exterior of the tubular body. Rotationally leading edges of the blades ( 20) carry a plurality of cutting elements (30) from the axially leading ends . Selected surfaces and edges of the bear tungsten carbide, which may compri se crushed tungsten carbide. The shell of the nose (14) is configured to ens ure drill out from the centerline thereof toward the side wall (16) of the t ubular body. A method of drilling out a reaming tool is also disclosed.
