Abstract: 25,520. Barthels, F. W. Dec. 23. Flanging. - Flanges are formed on tubes by compression on the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The tube end to be flanged is placed upon the hot mandrel b as far as the collar c, and the tube is held between the collar c and the cap h provided with an adjustable screw-nut g on the rod f, which forms an extensinn of the mandrel. By heating the tube end, hammering the head d of the mandrel, and tightening the screw nut g, the material is compressed, and by hammering is straightened, bulged, and compressed until a flange with thickened walls has been formed against or in the collar c. The collar may be flat, and the flange hammered conical. The invention is particularly applicable to copper tubes for steam connections.

Abstract: 11,859. Barthels, F. W. June 7. Metal pipes and tubes.-To unite a flange to a pipe or tube, such as a copper steam pipe, the flange a is formed with a boss b, in which is a circumferential groove c. Axial grooves d extend at regular intervals across the groove c. The pipe e is spun or hammered into the groove c, and the grooves d are filled with hard solder, which is heated from the front. The end of the tube may be flared at h.
