Abstract: The molecular weight distribution of a polyolefin is narrowed by a process wherein the polyolefin is brought for 0.001 to 100 seconds into a shear gradient whose speed gradient is from 1500 to 200,000 seconds-1. The process may be effected in a screw extruder, a high-speed kneader or a roll mill, and may be in the presence or absence of oxygen. Stabilizers (e.g. see Example 1) also may be present.

Abstract: Fibrous polyolefines purified by oxidativethermal degradation methods as described in Specification 883,804 and suspended in saturated hydrocarbons with/without water, are worked up by screening off the bulk of the saturated hydrocarbon, followed by squeezing the screened polyolefin mass and vacuum extruding the resulting polyolefin cake, optionally degrading to an intrinsic viscosity above 0,5, and finally granulating in the usual way. The polymer may be a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene and/or butene. In examples sieve drums, rollers, oil presses, screen and filter belts and fruit presses are used in effecting the method specified.

Abstract: Lumpy or granular material to be heat treated, e.g. in a degasification, calcination, polymerization, endothemic reaction process passes through a shaft-like chamber 1, Fig. 1, formed a high-frequency field, and which have provide a high-frequency field, and which have permeable walls 3 for the supply and/or withdrawal of gaseous or vaporous substances into or from the chamber. Each electrode is constructed as a hollow body subdivided into alternate inlet and outlet compartments a, b by partitions 7 having pipes in the outer, impermeable walls connected to suction or pressure blowers 8. The inlet or outlet apertures 3 may be of locally varying cross-section, be greater in number in the centre of the electrode than at the ends, or the apertures may be covered or be in the form of louvres. In a modification the material is conveyed horizontally through the chamber on a conveyer belt in the form of an electrode, and in a further embodiment the material moves downwardly under the influence of gravity in a vertical shaft-like frequency field, but may be fluidized by an upwardly directed stream of gas, air or vapour from the hollow spaces of the electrodes.
