Abstract: PURPOSE: To prepare sizes for paper, excellent in a sizing effect by dissolving or dispersing a specific modified product of a copolymer of a monoolefin and maleic anhydride or the like in an aqueous medium. CONSTITUTION: Copolymers having 800-100,000 molecular weight are obtained by copolymerizing (a) 12-40C monoolefins with (b) maleic anhydride or itaconic anhydride. The anhydride groups of the copolymers are amidated with morpholine to form semiamides which are partially or completely neutralized with an alkali (or alkaline earth) metal base, ammonia or an amine in an aqueous medium. The resultant product is used as sizes for paper stock or the surface of paper in a form of aqueous solution or dispersion.
