Abstract: The process involves polymerising at least one monomer from the group comprising conjugated diolefines having 4 or 5 carbon atoms and an acrylate of an alcohol having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of water and in the presence of an emulsifier and initiators to give a rubber latex. This latex is agglomerated, for example by adding an acrylate polymer dispersion or a polyvinyl ether dispersion, in such a manner that a mean particle size (d50 value of the integral weight distribution) of from 0.20 to 0.65 mu m is obtained. The agglomeration is followed by a (graft) polymerisation in which the monomers styrene, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate are grafted onto the agglomerated rubber latex in emulsion. The process is characterised by the use of potassium salts of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids having 10 to 30 carbon atoms as emulsifier.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of foams by melting a thermoplastic, mixing the melt with a volatile blowing agent at a pressure of from 25 to 250 bar, decompressing the mixture to atmospheric pressure, and cooling the foam. The plastic used is a mixture of A) from 95 to 20% by weight of a styrene polymer and B) from 5 to 80% by weight of polyphenylene oxide. The resultant foams having high heat distortion resistance can be used as insulating materials.
