Abstract: Porous shaped articles are produced from a polymeric resin by introducing into an enclosing mould a finely divided resin containing a volatile organic solvent having a boiling point lower than the softening point of the resin and heating to above the softening point to expand the resin and fill the mould which permits the escape of gases, but retains the resin, the solvent-containing resin being obtained by incomplete evaporation of the solvent from the solvent-resin solution. Specified resins are chlorinated polystyrene and poly-N-vinyl carbazole, preferably having a k-value of at least 30. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, p-xylene, methylene chloride and cyclononane for the carbazole and methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrafluoride and ethylene chloride for the chlorinated polystyrene. Pre-expanded particles of a solvent-containing resin may be used. The process details are the same as those described in the parent Specification.

Abstract: Finely particled expandable styrene polymers are manufactured by a process wherein styrene or a mixture of monomers comprising styrene and one or more a -ethylenically unsaturated compounds which can be copolymerized with styrene, and an organic compound which is liquid or gaseous at standard pressure and temperature which does not dissolve or only swells the styrene polymer obtained by polymerization of styrene or the said mixture of monomers and which has a boiling point lower than the softening point of the styrene polymer, is continuously introduced at the top of a pressure vessel having a diameter less than its height, the styrene or the said mixture of monomers is polymerized with the temperature at the top of the pressure vessel being between 70 DEG C. and 130 DEG C. and at the bottom between 170 DEG C. and 230 DEG C. and the pressure in the pressure vessel being more than the vapour pressure of the organic compound and the monomers at the temperature prevailing at the bottom of the vessel, the composition comprising styrene polymer and organic compound is continually discharged at the bottom of the pressure vessel at a rate equivalent to that at which the monomers and organic compound are supplied at the top of the pressure vessel, and the composition is cooled to 20 DEG C. to 65 DEG C. and then reduced in size. The mixture of monomers should contain at least 50% by weight of styrene. A polymer of ethylenically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable compounds may also be added to the monomer mixture. In general the expanding agents have boiling points greater than - 45 DEG C., e.g. n-pentane, heptane, trichlorofluoroethane and trifluoro-1,1,2-trichloroethane. The ratio of diameter to height of the polymerization vessel may be between 1:100 and 1:5.

Abstract: 1,126,913. Expandable styrene polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 14 Jan., 1966 [16. Jan., 1965], No. 1819/66. Headings C3C and C3P. Particulate expandable styrene polymers are produced by polymerizing styrene with or without one or more olefinically unsaturated monomeric polymerizable compounds in aqueous suspension in the presence of an expanding agent and 0À001 to 1% by weight on the monomers of a water-insoluble polymer of a vinyl ester, vinyl ether, acrylic ester or methacrylic ester of molecular weight 10 4 to 10 6 which will dissolve in the monomers and which is not homogeneously miscible with the styrene polymers obtained. In examples styrene, with optionally acrylonitrile, was polymerized in an aqueous mixture of a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and methyl acrylate, sodium pyrophosphate, benzoyl peroxide; pentane, hexane, butane and/or dichlorofluoromethane; and either polyvinyl isobutyl ether, polymethyl acrylate or methacrylate, poly-2-ethylhexyl acrylate, polyvinyl acetate, a butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyethyl acrylate or polyvinyl propionate.
