    Abstract: 1,132,868. Self-extinguishing styrene polymer compositions. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK A.G. 22 March, 1966 [1 April, 1965 (2)], No. 12484/66. Headings C3C, C3G and C3P. A self-extinguishing composition which may be used to produce porous mouldings comprises a styrene polymer, an organic brominated compound and 0À01-5% of 2,3-dimethyl-2,3- diphenylbutane. The polymer may be polystyrene, a copolymer containing at least 50% of styrene and acrylonitrile, or may be prepared by polymerizing styrene in the presence of polybutadiene. The bromine compound may contain at least 4 carbon atoms and more than 40% of bromine, e.g. hexabromocyclododecane or 2,3-tris-(dibromopropyl)-phosphate and the composition may contain at least 0À1% of bromine. In an example, a styrene polymer, an organic bromine compound and 2,3-dimethyl- 2,3-diphenylbutane was dissolved in methylene chloride, pentane was added, the solution was poured on to a glass sheet, the methylene chloride was allowed to evaporate and the sheeting obtained was expanded in steam.

    Abstract: A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic homopolymer or copolymer of styrene which may be substituted by alkyl groups in the nucleus or side chain and which contains more than 50% by wt. of styrene or the substituted styrene having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to the carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0.1-5%, and (c) 0.01-5% of (a) of a compound of formula where RA and RB are a phenyl radical which may be substituted by at least one C1- 3 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, a C1- 4 alkoxy radical, Cl or Br; R1 and R2 are H, Cl, Br, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or cyclohexyl; R3 and R4 are Cl, Br, cyano, nitro, a C1- 6 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or phenyl. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene and/or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. Compound (c) may be 2,3-diethyl - 2,3 - diphenylbutane; 2,2,3,3 - tetraphenylbutane or 2,3 - dimethyl - 2,3 - di - p - tolylbutane. The bromide (b) may be hexabromododecane, tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl)-phosphate or tetrabromoethane. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane, and may be formed into a foamed sheet.

A self-extinguishing composition consists of (a) a normally solid thermoplastic polymer of at least 50% by wt. of styrene which may be substituted, and less than 50% of at least one other copolymerizable compound having the group having intimately incorporated therewith (b) an organic bromide, having a plurality of bromine atoms attached to carbon atoms and the bromine atoms constituting more than 40% of the bromide, in such an amount that the composition has a bromine content of 0À1-5%, and (c) 0À01-5% of (a) of a polymer which is prepared from (i) a compound of formula where R 1 , R 2 , R 4 and R 5 are H, halogen or a C 1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and at least two of the above Rs are where R 7 is a C 1-4 linear aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R 8 is H or R 7 , and R 3 and R 6 are H or halogen atoms; or (ii) a mixture of the above compounds and a compound of the same formula where R 1 is where R 7 and R 8 are as before and the remaining Rs are H or halogen atoms. The (a) polymer may be polystyrene, a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile together with optionally polybutadiene, or a polymer obtained by polymerizing styrene in the presence of polybutadiene. Polymer (c) may be prepared by dehydropolymerization of p- or m-diisopropylbenzene with optionally isopropylbenzene, or 1,2,4-tri- or 1,2,4,5-tetra-isopropylbenzene. The bromide (b) may be hexabromocyclododecane or tris - (2,3 - dibromopropyl) - phosphate. The composition may be made by dissolving the three components in methylene chloride or by extruding the three components, with optionally kaolin; or by polymerizing styrene in the presence of an aq. mixture of polyvinylpyrrolidone, sodium pyrophosphate, benzoyl peroxide and the above (b) and (c) components. The composition may also contain a foaming agent, e.g. pentane or methyl chloride, and may be formed into a foamed sheet or strand.

    Abstract: Ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers are stabilized against unwanted polymerization by the addition of from about 0.0001% to 2% by weight of a substituted oxadiazole of the general formula or or a mixture of such oxadiazoles, wherein each of x1 to x5 represents a halogen atom or one of the radicals -N(R)2, -OR or -R, and R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical or an aryl radical which is substituted by nitro groups, or in which the substituents x2 and x3 together represent a methylenedioxy group. Specified monomers which are stabilized are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, 2-chloro-buta-1,3-diene, styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl toluenes, vinyl pyridines, vinyl imidazoles, vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl carbazole, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their esters with linear, branched and cycloaliphatic alcohols containing 1-20 carbon atoms, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids containing 2-20 carbon atoms, divinyl ether, tert-butyl vinyl ether, methyl vinyl ketone, tert-butyl vinyl ketone, and vinyl sulphonic and vinyl phosphonic acids and their salts. The monomers may be diluted with solvents such as cyclohexane, octane, benzene and toluene. Numerous examples of suitable oxadiazoles are given. Examples are given of the stabilization of monomers. Example (3) describes polymerization of the monomers.
