1,2-Dichloroethane is prepared by oxychlorination of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst which contains, on a conventional carrier, copper(II) chloride in a concentration such that the amount of copper ions is from 1 to 20% by weight, based on the total weight of the catalyst, by a process in which the catalyst is obtained by impregnating the carrier with an aqueous solution which contains copper(II) chloride and hydrogen chloride in amounts such that the weight ratio of copper ions to hydrogen chloride is from 13:1 to 130:1.

Abstract:
The process according to the invention comprises reacting the residues at temperatures of above 2000 DEG C and pressures of 1 to 100 bar with a gas mixture promoting combustion in a combustion chamber equipped with cooling devices. The gaseous reaction products which, upon leaving the combustion chamber, have temperatures of 200 to 800 DEG C are first cooled in a first cooling zone a) to temperatures in the range from 80 DEG C to 10 DEG C. The gaseous top products are treated in a process step b) in a suitable device with concentrated hydrochloric acid in the form of droplets having an average diameter of less than 500 mu .

Vorgeschlagen wird ein geformter Katalysator mit Kupfer(II)chlorid oder Kupferoxichlorid als aktiver Komponente, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß er aus a) 10 bis 95 Gew.% porösem Trägermaterial, auf dessen Oberfläche sich 2 bis 15 Gew.% Kupferionen in Form von Kupfer(II)chlorid und/oder Kupferoxichlorid und O bis 5 Gew %. Alkalimetallionen befinden; und b) 5 bis 90 Gew %. inertem Material. besteht, sowie ein Verfahren zur Herstellung dieses Katalysators.

A supported catalyst containing copper and alkali metals, wherein the content of copper is from 1.0 to 12% by weight, based on total catalyst and expressed as metal, and the total content of the alkali metals potassium, lithium and sodium is from 0.3 to 9% by weight, based on total catalyst. The novel catalyst is useful for the preparation of 1,2-dichloroethane by oxychlorination of ethylene.
