Surface-modified metal oxides (I) comprising nanoparticulate aluminum, cerium, iron, titanium, zinc or zirconium oxides coated with polyaspartic acid are new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing (I) by precipitating the metal oxide from an aqueous metal salt solution in the presence of polyaspartic acid, separating the precipitated metal oxide from the aqueous reaction mixture and drying the metal oxide; (2) cosmetic compositions containing (I).
