Abstract: Dimethylamine (I) is produced by reaction of methanol or mixts. of methanol and dimethyl ether (DME) with excess ammonia at 250-450 deg.C and 0.01-50 bar in the presence of an acid zeolite catalyst (II); the novelty is that (II) is a siloxane-trated ZK-5 zeolite. (II) is produced, e.g, by reaction of a Cs/K-aluminosilicate (ZK-5) with ammonium salt, followed by pyrolysis of the NH4-ZK-5, treatment with a silanising agent (e.g, soln. of Si(OMe)4 in toluene) and pyrolysis to form a layer of SiO2; selectivity for (I)/MMA can be varied by varying the SiO2 layer thickness. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides a selective process for the prodn. of (I), which is useful for the prodn. of solvents and pharmaceuticals; prior-art processes give mixts. of (I) with MeNH2 (MMA) and Me3N (TMA) which are difficult to separate by distn. due to the formation of complex azetropes.
