Abstract: Pure halonaphthalic acid anhydrides are prepared from haloacenaphthenes by oxidation with nitric acid in a mixture of aliphatic carboxylic acid, water and nitric acid in the presence of vanadate, with or without further metal salts, at an elevated temperature and the reaction product is isolated and subjected to an oxidative after-treatment with hypochlorite in aqueous solution at a pH of from 9 to 12 at an elevated temperature. The products are intermediates for the manufacture of optical brighteners.

Abstract: New polyoxyethyleneoxy-substd. acetanilide derivs. are cpds. of formula (I): R1 is 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, or halogen; R2 is H, 1-3C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, or halogen, R3 is H, 1-3C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, or halogen; R4 is -CO-O-R6 or -CO-S-R6; R5 is 1-6C alkyl or 1-4C alkenyl; R6 is Me or Et; and n is 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. (I) have fungitoxic activity against phytopathogenic fungi, esp. those of the class Phycomycetes. In some cases, their action is curative, and many of the cpds. (I) are active systemically. Results of tests demonstrating the fungicidal activity of (I) are given in the specification; thus, spraying tomato plants with a 0.06% dispersion of (I; R1 and R5 are Me, R2 and R3 are H, R4 is COOMe; n is 1) affords complete protection against subsequent infection with a spore suspension of Phytophthora infestans.
