Abstract: The pigments are of formula (in which R1 is hydrogen or alkyl; X is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine; R2 and R3 are hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, alkyl, alkoxy, alkyl sulphonyl, carbamoyl, sulphamoyl, or N-substd. carbamoyl or sulphamoyl; and R4 is cyano or carbamoyl). X is pref. Cl or Br.R1 is hydrogen, R2 is Cl, Br, CH3, OCH3, methyl sulphonyl or N-substd. carbamoyl and is adjacent to the acylamino gp. R3 is hydrogen, or Cl or CH3 in p-posn. to R2 and R4 is cyano. They have high brilliance and extremely strong covering power, being suitable for colouring plastics, printing inks or paints in orange to red-violet shades.

Abstract: Prepn. of 2-cyanomethylbenzimidazole (I) is carried out by reacting o-phenylenediamine (II) with a cpd. of formula (III) NC-CH2-CO-R1 (where R1 is NH2, NHR2, NR2R3 or OR2; R2 and R3 are H or aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic gps.). The reaction is effected at 130-150 degrees C in the absence of solvents, and pref. at 130-142 degrees C with a (III) : (II) molar ratio of 1-1.2:1. (I) is an intermediate for dyes and plant protection agents. The process gives good yields (e.g. 76%) using lower reaction temps. and simpler work-up procedures than prior art processes.
