A process for producing salts of 3-isopropyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazine-4-on-2,2-dioxide of general formula (I) (R1-R4 = H, lower alkyl, lower hydroxyalkyl) by reacting bentazone (IIa) in an organic solvent with an amine (IIIa), reacting bentazone (IIa) in an organic solvent virtually immiscible with water with an amine (IIIa) or an ammonium salt (IIIb) and taking salt (I) up in water or reacting bentazone (IIa) with an ammonium salt (IIIb) or sodium bentazone (IIb) with an ammonium salt (IIIc) in water.

The invention concerns a solid, non-hygroscopic magnesium salt of 3-isopropyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4-one 2,2 dioxide of formula: (see formula II) a method of preparing it, solid, in particular granular, formulations containing it plus its use in the control of undesired plant growth.
