    Abstract: To prepare boron trifluoride, calcium fluoride is reacted with oleum and boron compounds. The reaction is carried out in two stages, with a) in a first stage, reacting calcium fluoride with oleum and b) in a second stage, reacting the reaction mixture from the first stage with a boron compound of the general formula B2O3.yX2O, in which y is 0, 0.5, 1 or 3 and X is hydrogen or an alkaline metal. The amount of oleum to be introduced to the first stage is calculated in such a way that 1 mol of free SO3 is added per mol of calcium fluoride and one further mol of SO3 + 10% is added for each mol of X2O of the boron compound.
