Abstract: To prepare boron trifluoride, calcium fluoride is reacted with oleum and boron compounds. The reaction is carried out in two stages, with a) in a first stage, reacting calcium fluoride with oleum and b) in a second stage, reacting the reaction mixture from the first stage with a boron compound of the general formula B2O3.yX2O, in which y is 0, 0.5, 1 or 3 and X is hydrogen or an alkaline metal. The amount of oleum to be introduced to the first stage is calculated in such a way that 1 mol of free SO3 is added per mol of calcium fluoride and one further mol of SO3 + 10% is added for each mol of X2O of the boron compound.

Abstract: Iron whiskers are produced by thermal decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl vapor in an indirectly heated empty-space decomposer in which the cross-sectional area for entry of the iron pentacarbonyl into the empty-space decomposer is from 10 to 40% of the cross-sectional area of the empty-space decomposer, the mass flow density of the iron pentacarbonyl vapor, based on the cross-sectional area of the decomposer, is from 0.01 to 0.07 kg per square meter per second, and the temperature in the empty-space decomposer should at no point be below 360 DEG C.

Abstract: Silicon tetrafluoride is removed from gaseous boron trifluoride by treating the gas in a first stage at temperatures of from 10 to 60@C with a solution containing from 55 to 70% by weight of dissolved boron trifluoride. From this stage there is drawn off an exit gas which comprises practically pure silicon tetrafluoride and also a boron trifluoride-enriched solution from which boron trifluoride is desorbed at temperatures of from 90 to 200@C.

Abstract: The application relates to a process for the preparation of sulphur-free iron-oxide- and chromium-oxide-containing catalysts having BET surface areas of 20 to 100 m /g and in which more than 80% of the pore volume is in the pore radius range of 30 to 100 nm, an iron(III) oxide prepared from iron carbonyl having a mean grain size below 10 mu m and a BET surface area of greater than 50 m /g and chromium(III) oxide having a mean grain size below 40 mu m and a BET surface area of more than 30 m /g being mechanically mixed as powder or suspension and then tableted.
