Abstract: Finely divided ferric oxide, for use as a red transparent pigment in lacquers and plastics, is efficiently made in high yield by combustion of iron carbonyl in oxygen, in the presence of >=0.5 m3 excess O2, air and/or inert gas/mole iron carbonyl. The combustion is carried out at 250-800 degrees C but at temps. >500 degrees C, the dwell time of the ferric oxide in the combustion zone should be 30 secs. The product is collected using a cyclone separator and has a particle size 0.1 mu.
