Abstract: Benzil monoketals of formula (I; X=CO) are prepd. by oxidising the corresp. benzoin ketals of formula (II; X=CHOH), (where R1 and R2 are H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy or 2-6C alkoxyalkyl and Z is a divalent gp. of an aliphatic 2-8C diol) with DMSO in the presence of an acylating agent (III) in a polar solvent, pref. DMSO and/or DMF, at -10 to +100 degrees C. (I) are used as photo-initiators, and are obtd. in high yields, e.g. >90% of theoretical, economically, without causing pollution problems.
