Abstract: The use of a DNA sequence encoding a 1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate synthase (DOXS) to produce plants with an increased tocopherol, vitamin K, chlorophyll and/or carotenoid content is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method to produce a plant with increased tocopherol, vitamin K, chlorophyll and/or carotenoid content is characterized in that the plant expresses a 2458 bp sequence, fully defined in the specification or a sequence which hybridizes with it; (2) a method of transforming a plant comprises transforming a plant cell, callus tissue, a whole plant or protoplast of a plant cell with an expression cassette containing a promoter and a DNA sequence; (3) a plant with increased tocopherol, vitamin K, chlorophyll and/or carotenoid content containing an expression cassette as above; and (4) a test system based on the expression of an expression cassette as above to identify inhibitors of DOXS.
