Abstract: Thiophenes are produced by treating aliphatic hydrocarbons having at least 2 carbon atoms with sulphur or volatile sulphur compounds at elevated temperature in the presence of a compound of a metal of the 5th, 6th 7th or 8th Group of the Periodic Table as catalyst and of an inert gas, the volume of inert gas used being at least equal to the volume of the gaseous hydrocarbon. The inert gas may be, for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, or steam a gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and/or nitrogen such as a combustion gas, or a waste gas originating from the process. Suitable catalysts are, for example, compounds of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron and cobalt, which are preferably deposited on a carrier such as active alumina. The preferred starting materials are C4 hydrocarbons especially linear unsaturated hydrocarbons. Suitable volatile sulphur compounds are sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, ammonium sulphide, carbon oxysulphide, mercaptans and thioethers. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature in the range 400 DEG C.-1,000 DEG C.

In a process for cracking hydrocarbons in the presence of moving granular heat carriers at about 600‹ to 900‹ C., the entrained finelygrained heat carrier is separated in more than one stage after leaving the reaction chamber. The first separation takes place at temperatures between 400‹ and 600‹ C. such as in cyclones, electrical high-voltage fields or by ultrasonics, practically none of the reaction products being deposited on the heat carrier, and the further separation takes place at such a low temperature that the effluent high boiling point cracking products are separated together with the remain - heat carrier particles. In an example granulated coke is kept in rolling motion in a cylindrical reaction chamber by introducing superheated steam. Oxygen is supplied by nozzles above the grate and a petroleum distillation residue through other nozzles above the first ones, a temperature of 750 ‹ C. being set up in the coke. An attached cyclone separates about 75 per cent of the dust from the gaseous and vaporous products at a temperature of 500‹ C. and returns it directly to the moving bed. After passing through the cyclone separator the gas-vapour stream is injected with a mixture of asphalt and high boiling point oil, the residual dust being washed out with the injected liquids at 300‹ C. to 400‹ C. and returned to the coke bed through the oil supply pipe.
