A spray-dried, stabilized textile finishing agent comprises (a) as active component at least one methylol derivative of urea; (b) as a stabilizer 2% to 8% by weight (with reference to component (a) of at least one substance having the formula wherein Z denotes one of the radicals -NH- and -N(CH 2 OH)-, X denotes one of the radicals -NH-, -N(CH 2 OH)-, -CH 3 - and -O- and Y denotes a 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4- alkylene radical which may bear one or more hydroxyl groups, alkyl groups and/or alkoxy groups each having up to four carbon atoms; and (c) not more than 2% by weight of water. The agents may be prepared, for example, by reacting urea and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1: 1À4 to 1: 2.2 in aqueous solution at pH 6À5-9 and at a temperature up to 90‹ C. and supplying the reaction product to a spray drier, the stabilizer being added either during the dissolution of the urea, or after the formaldehyde has been added at any stage of the reaction, or after the reaction is over immediately prior to or during spray drying. After the reaction the aqueous reaction product is preferably allowed to crystallize out for a fairly long period, e.g. at least 24 hours, at low temperature, e.g. 15-28‹ C., and the crystal mash obtained, to which the stabilizer has preferably already been added, is subjected to spray drying.
