Abstract: The disc type magnetic data record carrier consists of a carrier material (S), a magnetic film (1) for the pick-up of servo information, a non-magnetic intermediate film (Z) and a second magnetic film (2) for the pick-up of data-information. The carrier material (S) is typically provided on both sides with foils. The film strength of each magnetic film is typically 0.06 to 0.6 um and the non-magnetic film has a film strength of 10 to 30 times that of the weaker films. The ratio of the coercive force between the first and second metal magnetic films is between 0.5 and 2.0. The surface of the second magnetic film is provided with a protective film.

Abstract: In the prodn. of rigid magnetic recording supports by depositing a thin Co-contg. ferro-magnetic metal film (I) on an anodised Al disc as substrate, opt. after depositing a non-magnetic intermediate metal coating (II), and providing the surface of (I) with a thin protective coating (III), the anodised Al disc is activated by treatment with a soln. of Pd(O) complex in an organic solvent and the complex is decomposed, pref. by heating, then (I) is deposited by electroless and then opt. electro-plating. Activation eliminates the need for (II) and discs with very good electromagnetic and the mechanical properties in use and good corrosion resistance are obtd. (I) is deposited directly on the activated surface. The metal-coatd disc is tempered under an inert gas at 150-300 degrees C. (III) is applied using a soln. of a film-forming organic lacquer binder in a volatile solvent to give a dry unbaked film thickness of max. 0.3 mu m, then the coating is dried and baked in an O2-contg. atmos. for 1-15 h at 200-300 degrees C.

Abstract: A method and circuit arrangements for detecting and evaluating dropouts or drop-ins on recording media, comprising reading and modifying the recorded digital signals, the size and type of fault being evaluated on the basis of fixed threshold levels. In the case of a dropout, for example, the fault is weighted by determining the differential of the envelope of the read signal. In the case of a drop-in, other noise signals are left out of consideration by nonlinear emphasis of the drop-in and appropriate choice of the threshold value. A circuit combination enables both dropouts and drop-ins to be detected and evaluated.

Abstract: The invention relates to an improved process for the manufacture of magnetic discs carrying very thin magnetic layers, by applying a fluid dispersion of magnetic materials in a binder mixture to rigid base discs by the spin-coating process. Above the side of the base disc which is to be provided with the magnetic layer, there are arranged means which produce an aerodynamic boundary layer above the discs during rotation of the latter. This avoids the formation of surface irregularities and of coating streaks during production of the layer by spin-coating.
