Abstract: 1,202,066. Making combustible gas. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 31 Aug., 1967 [5 Sept., 1966], No. 39918/67. Heading C5E. A gas comprising H 2 and CO is made by a partial combustion process in which sensible heat is recovered by making steam, which may be used in the process. A hydrocarbon fuel, e.g. methane, natural gas, LPG, gasoline or preferably heavy fuel oil, is reacted with O 2 at a temperature in the range 1200‹ to 1500‹ C. in a zone 2 in a pressure vessel 1 which encloses a twostep cooling zone 3, 4 through which the make gas is passed to an exit 5. The zone 3, 4 is enclosed by a gas-tight wall consisting of thinwalled finned tubes 6 welded together to define an empty annular space 7 between the vessel 1 and the wall 6, and thin-walled tubes 13 are mounted in the zone 4. Venting 8 provides for pressure equalization between the zones 3, 4 and the space 7. Cooling water is circulated through the tubes 6, 13 from a steam-water separating drum 11 by way of the headers and pipes illustrated. The process is suitable for gas pressures above 40 atmos. and steam pressures above 64 atmos.

Abstract: In the production of acetylene by subjecting hydrocarbons to high temperatures, the hot gas is quenched in a single stage by injecting a hydrocarbon oil boiling above 150 DEG C. in a volume ratio to gas (measured under standard conditions) of at least 1 : 100 without any appreciable cracking of the oil and separating the hot oil containing carbon black from the gas. The oil is preferably an aromatic oil and useful heat is extracted from it before its reuse; the carbon black content is preferably reduced to below 35% by weight e.g. by removing part of the oil and replacing this by fresh oil. The gas is preferably also later washed with an oil boiling in the range 80-450 DEG C. having a specific gravity below 0.95. The examples relate to the partial combustion of gasoline and of methane; reference is also made to heating hydrocarbons by electric discharge and exposure to hot flame gases. Specification 893,504 is referred to.
