Abstract: The preservative is a liq. mixt. of NH4 propionate (I), propionic acid (II) and water (III) at mole ratios (I):(II) of 1:1.25-0.4 and (I):(III) of 1:1.6-3.8. The mixt. is applied to the fodder at 0.2-3 wt. %. The mixt. is more effective than the more dilute mixts. previously proposed and packaging costs and storage space are reduced. Compared with (II) alone the mixt. has a less offensive smell, is less corrosive towards Fe, is easily measured out, can be stored at low temp. without crystallising and provides nutritionally useful N.
