    Abstract: The invention comprises compounds of formula [(C5H5)X(CO)3]nY, in which X represents chromium, tungsten or molybdenum, Y represents hydrogen, a metal cation or a complex cation and n is equal to the valency of Y. They may be prepared by reacting an alkali metal cyclopentadienyl with chromium, tungsten or molybdenum hexacarbonyl and, if desired, reacting the resultant organo-alkali metal compound with an acid, a water-soluble salt of a metal or of a complex cation. The reaction is preferably carried out in an inert solvent such as dioxane, dimethyl formamide, ethylene glycol monomethyl or monoethyl ether, in the absence of atmospheric oxygen. Aqueous solutions of the alkali metal salts yield in the absence of air the hydrides on acidification with a strong acid such as acetic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, paratoluene sulphonic or trichloracetic. Metal salts, e.g. of copper, lead, thallium, cadmium, mercury and salts of complex cations such as the dicyclopentadienyl cobaltic cation may also be prepared. On standing in vacuo, the hydrides reversibly split off hydrogen to give dimers of formula [(C5H5)X(CO)3]2. O standing in air the hydrides lose water to give the dimers. In the examples the following are prepared: (1) cyclopentadienyl chromium bicarbonyl hydride and (2) the mercuric salt thereof; (3) the dicyclopentadienyl cobaltic salt thereof [Co(C5H5)2]+[(C5H5)Cr (CO)3] -; (4) and (5) the dimeric [(C5H5)Cr(CO)3]2; (7) cyclopentadienyl molybdenum tricarbonyl hydride; (8) cyclopentadienyl tungsten tricarbonyl hydride; and (9) the thallium, lead, cadmium, copper, dicyclopentadienyl cobaltic and trisphenanthroline nickel salts thereof.
