    Abstract: Novel dipalladium dicarbonyl halides having the empirical formula Pd2(CO)2X (where X is halogen) are prepared by reacting carbon monoxide with an adduct of a palladium halide and an unsaturated organic compound in dissolved or suspended form in a reaction medium, whilst excluding atmospheric oxygen. The palladium halide adduct may be with an olefinically unsaturated compound or a nitrile, e.g. ethylene, propylene, buradiene, cyclooctene, cyclooctadiene, or benzonitrile. The carbon monoxide is preferably dried prior to use and passed in a uniform stream through the reaction medium. The reaction may be carried out at a temperature of 0-100 DEG C., a pressure of 1-400 atm. and in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen.

    Abstract: Metal carbonyl complexes of the formula (L)xM(CO)n-(1+XD)(COR)(CH3) in which x is 0 or 1, L denotes a unidentate to tridentate ligand, M is a metal atom of the Groups VA, VIA, VIIA and VIII, n is 4, 5 or 6, D is the number of CO ligands replaced by L and R is an aryl, alkyl or aralkyl radical are disclosed. These complexes are made by reacting the metal carbonyl or L-substituted derivative thereof with an organo-alkali metal compound in an organic solvent and inert atmosphere to form an intermediate of composition B[LxM(CO)n-(1+XD)COR] in which B is an alkali metal atom. The alkali metal atom is then eliminated by acidification and the complex is formed by reaction with an alkylating agent, e.g. dimethyl sulphate, diethyl sulphite or diazomethane. The intermediate can be, if desired, precipitated as a quaternary ammonium salt of formula in which R1 is an alkyl radical, e.g. methyl. The organic solvent can be ethers or hydrocarbons. The reaction temp. may be 0-100 DEG C. Acidification can be with a mineral acid, e.g. H2SO4 or HCl. The inert atmosphere can be N2 or a rare gas. Aldehydes, e.g. and benzaldehydes can be made by hydrolysis of the intermediate.

    Abstract: The invention comprises cyclopentadienyl vanadium oxydihalides of formula (C5H5) VOX2 where X is halogen. They may be prepared by reacting cyclopentadienyl vanadium carbonyl compound such as cyclopentadienyl vanadium tetracarbonyl in the absence of water with a hydrogen halide or a compound which splits off hydrogen halide, and an oxidising agent. Suitable oxidising agents include chlorine, bromine and iodine, compounds which readily split off halogen such as lead tetrachloride, oxygen, gas mixtures containing oxygen or compounds which evolve oxygen. The reaction may be carried out in proton-inactive solvents such as benzene and its homologues, chlorinated hydrocarbons such as chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, ketones, aldehydes and ethers. The preparation of cyclopentadienyl vanadium oxydichloride and cyclopentadienyl vanadium oxydibromide is described.
