Abstract: Process for coating paper and cardboard by applying an aqueous paper coating composition to the surface of the paper or cardboard, wherein the paper or cardboard is first subjected to a corona discharge and the aqueous coating composition is then applied in the known manner. Papers produced in this way are distinguished by improved printability.

Abstract: Fibrils made by pumping a soln., in methylketone, tetrahydrofuran or 1,4-dioxan, of styrene, vinyl- or vinylidene-chloride into a chamber at ambient temp. which is simultaneously supplied with a liq. to cause pptn. of the polymer in a zone subjected to high shear at a work input rate of >5 W.s/cm3. For mfr. of fibres 0.5-30 mm long, 0.5-10 mym across, with a specific surface area of 10-70 m2/g and a fineness of 15-50 degrees SR (Schopper-Riegler scale). The fibres are suitable for mfr. of synthetic papers or cardboard or for use in moulding compsns. The fibres produced are readily isolated than those precipitated by coagulation in bulk from (hot) solns. The fibres produced are relatively white and behave similarly to cellulosic fibres when forming mats.

Abstract: Conversion into fibrils of soluble polymeric materials pptd. from soln. into a liq. subjected to high shear, where the polymer feedstock is derived from the residual aq. phase of suspension polymerisation of styrene, after separation of the prod. polystyrene beads. Used to produce fibrils suitable for mfr. of synthetic paper or cardboard or for use as a fibrous filler in moulding compsns. Efficiently utilises material which otherwise would be wasted or recovered with difficulty directly from a glutinous mixt. which would result from chemical coagulation in bulk under low shear conditions, e.g. by use of acrylic acid copolymers, ammonium or hot persulphates.
