Abstract: 996,553. Securing means for protective screens. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Feb. 14, 1963 [Feb. 21, 1962], No. 5964/63. Heading A5A. Means for securing a protective screen of incombustible material to an article comprise a securing element, e.g. a nail, bolt or dowel, which is surrounded for at least part of its length between the screen and the article by one or more plates composed of an alkali metal silicate containing 20 to 70% by weight water and 10 to 40% synthetic silicate fibres, e.g. of glass or mineral wool. Such plates expand to form a stable foam structure when heated and thus will then insulate the securing element. Their expansion may also serve to force the screen away from the article to provide an air space therebetween, the unexpanded construction being retained in place by an easily heatdeformable spacer which may surround a part of the securing element either between the screen and article or on the side of the article away from the screen. Alternatively, the securing element may be recessed into the article and the deformable spacer placed so as to bear against a rigid support for the unexpanded plates. Figs. 1 and 2, 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 depict three embodiments of the invention before and after exposure to heat wherein the screen 1 is secured by bolt 3 to the article 5, the expandable plates 4 being situated therebetween. The heat-deformable spacer 5 maintains the unexpanded construction rigid. Specification 944,133 is referred to.
