Abstract: 1,135,476. Oxidation of methanol. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 6 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 15240/66. Heading C2C. Production of formaldehyde by removing a fraction of lower boiling point than methanol from a crude liquid methanol, vaporizing the remainder, subjecting the resulting vapour to oxidative dehydrogenation with oxygen or a gas containing free oxygen in contact with a metallic silver catalyst, optionally in the presence of steam, at elevated temperature to form formaldehyde characterized by adding alkali to the crude methanol before, during and/or after removal of the said fraction of lower boiling point than methanol and before vaporization of the remainder. The liquid crude methanol used is obtained by conventional methods from carbon monoxide and hydrogen and may contain water and other specified impurities. The fraction of lower boiling point than methanol may be contaminated with iron carbonyl and boils in the range 55‹ to 64‹ C. The preferred alkalis are hydroxides, oxides or carbonates of the alkali metals or alkaline earth metals in solid form or dissolved in water and are added, at a temperature in the range 30‹ to 150‹ C., in amounts such that a pH of 11 to 13À5 is established in the crude liquid methanol. Conventional metallic silver catalysts are used in the oxidative dehydrogenation which is effected at from 400‹ to 750‹ C.

Abstract: Methanol is oxidatively dehydrogenated at 450-700 DEG C. to formaldehyde in the presence of silver crystals on a Cr-Ni steel support, optionally with a minor amount of Mo, Mn, Cu, Ti or Nb also present. The reaction may be effected in the presence of inert gases or vapours, e.g. steam.ALSO:Formaldehyde is made from methanol in the presence of silver crystals supported on Cr-Ni steel. Additionally the catalyst may contain Mo, Mn, Cu, Ti or N6.

Abstract: In a process for the production of formaldehyde from methanol, crude methanol is submitted to distillation to remove a low-boiling fraction which contains the iron carbonyl contaminants, and the iron-free methanol remaining as residue is subjected to dehydrogenation in the presence of a silver metal catalyst. The distillation is preferably carried out by introducing the crude methanol into the upper part of a fractionating column having a efficiency equivalent to 2 to 20 theoretical plates, a reflux ratio between 1:10 and 1:100 being employed in the fractionation. In general, the amount of distillate, withdrawn from the top of the column, amounts to 0.2 to 0.4% by weight with reference to the crude methanol. In an example, the iron-free methanol, obtained as distillation-residue, is mixed with 45% by weight of water. The solution is evaporated the vapours are mixed with air, and the vapour-mixture is passed over silver crystals at a temperature of about 625 DEG C. whereby the methanol is converted into formaldehyde.
