Abstract: New copolymer prepd. by radical polymerisation, comprising: (A) 30-99.9 wt.% main monomers chosen from 1-20 C alkyl(meth)acrylates, 1-20 C carboxylic acid vinyl esters, vinyl aromatic cpds. with up to 20 C atoms, ethylenic unsatd. nitriles, vinyl halides or 2-8C aliphatic hydrocarbons contg. 1-2 double bonds; (B) 0.01-5 wt.% mixt. of hydrolysable silicon cpds. comprising: (B1) ethylenic unsatd. copolymerisable silicon cpds., and (B2) ethylenic satd. silicon cpds. bonded to the polymer chain during copolymerisation to act as regulators, the wt. ratio of (B1) to (B2) being 0.01-1:1-0.01; and (C) 0-69.99 wt.% monomers other than (A) or (B). Also claimed are sealing, bonding and coating materials contg. the copolymer and opt. at least 20 wt.% filler (wrt material).

Abstract: A process for preventing efflorescence on mineral substrates (I) comprises treating the surface of (I) with an aq. prepn. contg., as principal component, an aq. dispersion of a polymer (II) contg. 0.1-5 wt.% chemically-bonded organo-Si cpd. (III) which forms a silanol by hydrolysis. Pref., (II) is prepd. by emulsion polymerisation of a mixt. of 95-99.5 wt.% n-butyl or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, ethyl or methyl methacrylate and/or styrene (at least 2 of these monomers) and 0.5-5 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid, (meth)acrylamide or vinylsulphonic acid, in the presence of (III), esp. e.g. vinyltrimethoxysilane, gamma-methacryloxypropyl- trimethoxysilane, 3-mercaptopropyl- trimethoxysilane, gamma-glycidoxypropyl- trimethoxysilane (IIIA). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used esp. for preventing efflorescence on concrete roof tiles, bricks, etc.. The process provides a highly weather-resistant coating which affords excellent protection against lime efflorescence; the coating does not become sticky at elevated temp. and therefore does not attract dirt in hot weather.

A) aromatic ketone(s) of formula R-CO-R1 (I), and (C) 0.1-7 wt.% (w.r.t. A) aromatic ketone(s) of formula (II), (III), (IV) or 2,4,6-trimethylbenzophenone; the total amt. of (B+C) = 0.1-7 wt.% w.r.t. (A); R is linear 1-4C alkyl, branched opt. substd. 3-4C alkyl, 6-20C aryl or the gp. R1; R1 of a gp. of formula (V). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of paint and coating systems (claimed). Also claimed are paint and coating prepns. contg. PD, and concrete roof tiles coated with PD. The invention provides aq. polymer dispersions contg. a mixt. of hydrophilic and hydrophobic photo-initiators, which enable the prodn. of coating systems with increased UV sensitivity, even after exposure to rain, and a low tendency to soiling, esp. soiling caused by efflorescence of mineral substrates.
