Abstract: Spent catalysts used for oxidation of aromatic or unsatd aliphatic hydrocarbons, esp catalysts contg. V2O5, and TiO5 plus minor amts. of other oxides all supported on an inert carrier, are contacted with CCl4 at >=100 degrees C. the volatile reaction mixt. is scrubbed with aq. ammonia, the resulting ammonium vanadate is sepd. and calcined at 200-800 degrees C to recover V2O5. The use of CCl4 as a chlorinating agent is more convenient than the conventional use of SOCl2 or COCl2 which are highly toxic and corrosive.

Abstract: Phthalic anhydride is continuously mfrd. by air-oxidn. of o-xylene in presence of a supported catalyst which is firmly arranged in the tubes of a reactor comprising a bundle of tubes, the tubes being surrounded by a salt-bath, and the catalyst consisting of an inert carrier and a catalytically active compsn. applied thereon and contg. 99-85 wt.% TiO2 and/or ZrO2, 1-15% V2O5 and 0.1-0.5, pref. 0.2-0.5% P, the supported catalyst contg. up to 3 wt.% V2O5. The salt bath is initially adjusted to 375-410 degrees C; at least 1000 l air and at least 33g o-xylene/Nm3 air air passed through each tube so that a hot-spot temp. of 450-465 degrees C is obtd. in the first one-third of the catalyst layer. After at least 1/2h. the throughput of air (and opt. of o-xylene) is increased without exceeding the hot spot temp. of 465 degrees C; finally the hourly throughput of air is set at 5000-8500 l air and 40-60 g o-xylene/Nm3 air and the hot-spot temp. adjusted to 540-480 degrees C with the aid of the salt bath. Steady control of the hot-spot temp. both prolongs the service life of the catalyst (by avoiding too high temp.) and eliminates risk of interruption of the reaction (by undesired drop of temp. below 500 degrees C).

Abstract: Conventional production of phthalic anhydride from naphthalene or o-xylene over a V2O5 catalyst in a fixed bed converter at 300 - 450 degrees C is started up at low throughput (low air or low hydrocarbon or both) to develop a hot spot near the gas inlet, and throughput raised gradually to a max. when the hot spot lies 30 - 100 cm. from the inlet and is 50 - 150 degrees C, pref. 70 - 120 degrees C, above the temp. of the heat exchange liquid. The procedure gives a purer product and an increased catalyst life.
