Abstract: Polymerisable esters (II) of 3-methylpentane-1,5-diol, (I), with acrylic and/or methacrylic acid are new. They are prepd. by esterifying acrylic and/or methacrylic acid with (I), in the presence of an acid esterification catalyst and of an entrainer for water formed in reaction. Use of (II) in polymer prepn. is claimed. (II) are esp. useful in prepn. of radiation-hardenable lacquers. They may be used, e.g. in 0.1-15 (0.5-5) wt.% concn., for prepn. of aq. dispersions of copolymers of olefinically unsatd. monomers contg. predominating quantities of other acrylates, vinyl aromatic monomers, vinyl esters or halides. (II) have less smell and toxicity than other alkanediol (meth)acrylates.

Abstract: Prepn. of magnetic recording carrier by application of a layer of a liq. dispersion of finely divided magnetic pigment in a binding agent forming olefinically unsaturated polymerisable material, which may contain further additives, onto a carrier material, opt. drying and hardening of the layer by ionised rays. The polymerisable material contains at least 15 wt.% calc. on the total amt. of at least one of the gps. CH2 = CR-CO -O- and CH2 = CR-CO-N - R1 (where R = H or CH3 and R1 = H or 1-8C alkyl). Also, the liq. dispersion contains up to 60 wt.% calc. on the total amt., of >=1 organic solvent. The prod. has improved magnetic properties.
