Abstract: New N,N'-di-(2",6"-di-substd. phenyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl diimides (I) are of formula (I) (in which R1 and R2 are i-Pr or Cl or R1 is Me or Et and R2 is 3-4C alkyl). (I) are used for bulk colouring of plastics (esp. polystyrene and rigid PVC, giving clear fluorescent orange shades with very good light fastness) and for the concn. of light. (I) in which R1 and R2 are Cl is also very suitable for the prodn. of electrophotographic recording material. (I) have much better solubility in organic solvents and plastics than familiar bisaryl imides. (I) can be prepd. by condensn. of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid (II) or its anhydride (IIA), with the corresp. 2,6-di-substd. anilines (III) in solvents or diluents, e.g. quinoline (IV), naphthalene or a large excess of (III), at 180-230 deg.C, pref. in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. ZnCl2, Zn acetate, Zn propionate or HCl.

Abstract: Novel covering pigment form of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetra-carboxylic acid-bis(2'5,'-dimethylphenyl)-imide is pred. by heating the finly divided crude pigment, in the form of agglomerates of chiefly 0.3 mu m and smaller in particle size, in water or in a mixt. of water and 2-10C alkanols, 4-10C alkanones, 6-8C ccloalkanols or cycloalkanones, benzene opt. substd. by 1-3Cl and/or 1-3C alkyl gps. or mixtures thereof, at 30-200 degrees C. and opt. under pressure. Uses are for colouring lacquers, printing inks, stoving lacquers; fof bulk dyeing PVC and polyolefines which are to be used for the mfr. of fibres and bristles. The clear bright red shades having good fastness props. th pigment has good covering power and when used with other pigments, esp. white pigments in lacquers, gives very full tone shiny coatings.

Abstract: Leuco-1,4,5,8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinones (I) contg. 1-5 wt. % Br or Cl are prepd. by treating a mixt. of 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy- and 1,8-diamino-4,5-dihyroxyanthraquinones (prepd. by reducn. and halogenation of dinitroanthraquinone mixts. then treating the tri- and tetra-halo diaminoanthraquinones with H2SO4-boric acid) with dithionite in alkaline medium. Pref. starting materials contain 1-2 Br atoms. When reacted with NH3, aliphatic amines or phenylaliphatic amines (I) give dyes contg. 1-4 wt.% Cl which have better colouring properties on synthetic and semi-synthetic fibres than dyes obtd. from halogen-free leuco cpds.

Y is Cl or Br; n is 0-3. Used for colouring of paints, resins, printing inks, distempers, and mass colouring of plastics in orange to bluish-red shades. Also as vat dyes. Good to very good fastness to light and weather. Fastness to solvents, over-painting and plasticisers is very good to excellent.
