Abstract: A material which is readily soluble in water and suitable for textile finishing is a solid mixture which contains not >0.3% by wt. free HCHO and contains at least two of the components urea, monomethylol urea and dimethylolurea in such proportions that the molar ratio of free and combined urea to combined HCHO ranges from 1:1.4 to 1:1.85. The mixture may be obtained by reacting urea and HCHO in the molar ratio 1:1.4 to 1:1.85 in aqueous solution at pH 6.5 to 8.5 at 30 DEG to 40 DEG C for 1/2 to 5 hours. The reaction mixture is then cooled to 15 DEG to 28 DEG C. and stirred at this temperature for at least 24 hours; the crystal mash obtained is spray dried. The crystal mash may contain at least 30% by wt. of dry residue. The pH of the reaction may be controlled by use of an organic base of medium strength, e.g. triethanolamine.ALSO:Textile materials are rendered crease resistant by treating with an aqueous soln. of a solid mixture which contains not >0.3% by wt. free HCHO and contains at least two of the components urea, monomethylolurea and dimethylolurea in such proportions that the molar ratio of free and combined urea to combined HCHO ranges from 1:1.4 to 1:1.85. Abstract: Dimethylolglyoxalmonoureine is made by reacting urea with an equimolar amount of glyoxal in an aqueous medium at pH of 3.8 to 4.2 at 25-60 DEG C. and reacting the intermediate thus obtained, without isolation, with two molar equivalents of formaldehyde at a pH of 7 to 7.5 at 25-60 DEG C. As glyoxal in aqueous solution shows an acid reaction it is usually necessary to adjust the pH at both stages with an alkaline reagent, preferably sodium carbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate. The glyoxal is preferably used as a 40% by wt. aqueous solution and the formaldehyde as a 30-40% by wt. aqueous solution.
