Abstract: The initiator is suitable for polymerisation, at 1,000-7,000 atmos. and temps. of 150-400 degrees C, of mixtures of 100 ppw ethylene with 0.5-100 ppw another ethylenic unsaturated monomer with 3-20C atoms. The initiator consists of a mixture of 2-50 mol-ppm (calculated on ethylene) of oxygen with 0.5-30 mol-ppm of a hydroperoxide of general formula R1R2R" -COOH or R1R"'-COOH where R1 and R2 stand for alkyl gps. (C = 1-4), R" stands for an alkyl group. (C=3-12), or certain aliphatic or aromatic ring systems, and R"' for the residue of an alicyclic group (C=4-13). The hydroperoxide is preferably 2-hydroperoxy-2-O-isopropylphenyl-propane.
